University of Texas Libraries Collection Development Subject Policies

The following policies are organized by subject of collecting interest rather than by academic department. While many of the subjects for which statements appear are the main concern of one particular department, policy statements are also provided for some subjects in which the University offers no specific program of concentration. This approach sometimes means that not all the topics of concern to a particular department will be found in one subject statement. The intent has been to treat each topic in one place and to provide cross-references when needed.

Each statement includes:

  • A statement of purpose which enumerates the academic programs in the subject and known areas of interest
  • A statement of general collecting guidelines which defines such considerations as languages, chronological and geographical emphases or restrictions, treatment of subject, types of material and dates of publication
  • Observations and qualifications by subject subdivisions
  • An assigned collecting level to each subject subdivision
  • Library of Congress subject breakdowns, library locations, and any cross-references to other policies

All of the following subject policies will be undergoing a systematic review and revision to reflect new technologies, electronic information resources, or new programs that have developed since the time they were originally adopted. If you have any questions about their content please feel free to contact the subject bibliographer/specialist.
