Locating Images
You will invariably
need to consult images in the process of doing your research. There are
many resources available that not only include photographs, but also include
plans, views, sections, elevations and details of buildings and spaces.
Consult the following recommended sources to locate architecture images:
- ARTstor:
Digital images of visual material from many time periods and cultures. Focuses on, but is not limited to, the arts. Includes architecture, painting, sculpture, photography, decorative arts, and design as well as many other forms of visual culture. Search by keyword, or, through the advanced search, by creator, title, location, repository, subject, material, style or period, work type, culture, description, technique, and number.
- Avery Index: A citation in the Avery Index will note whether or not
an article contains photographs, plans, views, sections, elevations or

- Catena: Digital Archive of Historic Gardens and Landscapes

Digital images of historic gardens and landscapes with an initial focus on the villa. Browse by site, location, rare books and archival materials, work type or architectural component.
- Cities/Buildings Image Database:
This
University of Washington database offers 5,000(+) images of buildings
worldwide. Search for buildings by country, city, style, title of building,
architect and/or date of construction.
- DASE (Liberal Arts Digital Archive SErvices) Collection:
A digital media repository/search engine/slideshow maker/rss feed creation tool. Includes digital images related to architecture, art, archeology, anthropology, American Studies, Asian Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, and more.
- Great Buildings Online:
Includes 3D models, photographs, bibliographies and Internet links.
- Grove
Dictionary of Art: Over 100,000 images are available in
The Dictionary of Art online. (Consult Searching

- Teague,
Edward. World Architecture Index: a Guide to Illustrations. New York:
Greenwood, 1991 (NA 202 T4 1991 Architecture Lib Reference).
Indexes roughly 7,200 architectural works reproduced in 100(+) books covering
architecture, engineering and planning. Provides citations to works containing
reproductions of exterior and interior views, plans, elevations and sections.
The titles of the works that are indexed are abbreviated. Consult the
abbreviation key at the front of the index.
