Classics Library Hires New Security Guards

On Wed., July 15th, the Classics Library hosted two Roman visitors, complete in authentic historical military uniforms suiting their status and characters.  The Roman military tribune and his infantry soldier  guarded the library with gusto,  enforced library policy, and provided gentle editing suggestions to Valerio Caldesi Valeri, in polishing up his dissertation.  Matthew Shane  (undergraduate at UT) and Michael Sweet (UT staff member) used the photo op. to engage in this re-enactment. They wanted to use the Classics Library as they love coming here.  Following the photo shoot Matthew Shane (or Lucius Saturius Surinus as he prefers to be called), graciously agreed to  model for a class discussion that happened to be ongoing that morning on military gear.

Summer 2009 - From the Libraries E-News

With gratitude...

ImageUniversity of Texas Libraries would like to acknowledge Dr. David Nilsson, for a gift given to the Classics Library in recognition of Gina Giovannone's dedication and work ethic.

"Gina can always find a reference for what I ask her. She is helpful and resourceful, sometimes going as far as to find a faculty member who can elaborate on a specific question for me," praises Dr. Nilsson.

Dr. Fred Heath has chosen to match Dr. Nilsson's gift, which will be used to purchase items of special interest to Dr. Nilsson, including texts focusing on grammar.

Gina, a Library Assistant III, has been working with UT Libraries for almost six years and is always eager to help anyone and everything as evidenced in this photo of Gina feeding a hungry squirrel outside of the Classics Library and Waggener Hall.

Thank you to Gina for all you do and thank you to Dr. Nilsson for your continued support and generosity.

Suggestion Box

Later, in December 2007, the ever imaginative and skillful Steve and Frank made us our very own suggestion box, an exact replica of the Pantheon in Rome. The last picture is, of course, the real thing. Just click on the image to enlarge.

Renovation

The summer of 2006 was an exciting time for the Classics Library. We got a complete makeover. The walls were all painted, the shelving refreshed or replaced, plus we received two brand new comfy chairs. Our wonderful facilities staff also made us two new computer desks with Doric(ish!) columns for legs. Plus a miniture illuminated, erupting Vesuvius. This project resulted in not only a cleaner, fresher, more aesthetically pleasing work and study space, it also gained us more room on our previously very tightly packed shelves.

Here are some before, during and after photos. Before = yellow walls, after = green. Just click on the image to enlarge. Enjoy.

In the summer of 2009 the Classics Library's renovation was finished by Frank, Steve and the crew. The closed stacks down the corridor from the main library was given a facelift. Again the walls were painted and all new shelving erected.
