Selected Standards Organizations on the Web

Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute
(ARI)- is a voluntary, nonprofit organization comprised of the manufacturers of air conditioning, refrigeration, and heating products. The more than 60 standards now published are mainly performance-rating standards, although some are application or terminology standards. Many ARI standards are accepted as American National Standards.

American Concrete Institute (ACI)- serves the various components of the concrete industry. It has about one hundred technical committees, and the documents produced by these committees are arranged into five groups in the ACI Manual of Concrete Practice. They include research and administration, materials and properties of concrete, design and construction practices, structural analysis, and special products and processes.

American National Standards Institute Online (ANSI)- is a private, nonprofit organization that facilitates the development of voluntary national consensus standards.

American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)- is composed of 132 technical standards writing committees. They have published approximately 9,100 standard specifications, tests, practices, guides, and definitions for materials, products, systems, and services. ASTM has published standards dealing with metals, flammability, chemical products, lubricants, fossil fuels, textiles, paint, plastics, rubber, pipe, forensic sciences, electronics, energy, medical devices.

American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE)- is an international organization of 50,000 persons with chapters throughout the world. The Society is involved with research, standards writing, continuing education and publications.

American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)- serves the technical interests of its members, with a goal toward being increasingly professional in its outlook.

American Welding Society (AWS) - works to advance the science, technology, and application of welding and related joining disciplines. AWS has published more than 140 standards under the guidelines of the American National Standards Institute.

British Standards Institution (BSI)

Canadian General Standards Board - web page contains a calendar, electronic catalogs, products lists, publication lists, and links to other standard sites.

Canadian Standards Association (CSA)

Computer & Communications Standards - Scores of links to standard bodies, including but not limited to developing Internet standards.

DoD Standards - U.S. Department of Defense Standards

Department of Energy (DOE) Technical Standards - contains a great range of handbooks designed to bring a consensus of standards, to develop needed technical standards that are not readily available, and to communicate these standards to those who use them. A search function allows users to sift through the large amount of information here to access the sections most useful to them.

European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI)

Global Engineering Documents

IEC publications catalog - Includes full infomation on published standards.

IEEE Standards - This site includes information on the SPA system, a loosely connected set of information technologies intended to streamline the IEEE standards development process.

International Organization for Standardization (ISO) - is a non-governmental organization established in 1947. The mission of ISO is to promote the development of standardization and related activities in the world with a view to facilitating the international exchange of goods and services, and to developing cooperation in the spheres of intellectual, scientific, technological and economic activity. ISO maintains a searchable online catalogue of international standards. First time users may want to read the tutorial on how to use the catalogue.

International Telecommunication Union (ITU) - ITU-T Recommendations (standards), form the foundations of the information and communications technologies of today. Anytime you make a simple telephone call, send an SMS, or receive streaming video to your mobile phone or computer an ITU-T Recommendation will have played a fundamental role. Developed in study groups (SGs) made up of experts from the private and public sectors, ITU-T Recommendations help drive the global information society allowing social and economic development worldwide.

Global IHS - The IHS "Standards Store." Includes American and International Standards for purchase.

MIL/DOD-STD-xxx, MIL/DOD-HDBK-xxx, MIL-specs, MIL-PRF, DIDs, access to current information associated with military and federal specifications and standards in the management of the Defense Standardization Program (DSP). MIL documents are available as free PDF downloads to the public.

Search by putting in the base number only (no letters or rev levels) in the "Document Number" field. You will see everything in the ASSIST database with that number, even if the document has changed from a SPEC to a PREF, etc. DOD-Adopted industry specs/stds are also identified, but only the adoption notices are available; the documents must be obtained (purchased) from the issuing organization.

National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) - Develops and disseminates surface preparation standards and other standards relevant to the Corrosion Industry.

National Electrical Manufactures Association (NEMA)- is the trade association through which the electrical industry develops and promotes positions on standards and government regulations.

National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)  - advocates scientifically-based consensus codes and standards, research, and education for fire and related safety issues. The NFPA Standards are available for UT affiliates at NFPA in IHS

National Information Standards Organization (NISO) - develops and promotes technical standards used in a wide variety of information services. NISO is a nonprofit association accredited as a standards developer by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the national clearinghouse for voluntary standards development in the U.S.
The website also offers select standards for free download at: http://www.techstreet.com/list_niso_stds.tmpl

National Resource for Global Standards (NSSN) - is an electronic network that will link the standards systems of the hundreds of organizations involved in the development, production, distribution, and use of technical standards and will provide cataloging, indexing, searching and routing capabilities to the entire range of national, regional and international standards and standards-related information.

OSHA Computerized Information System (OCIS)- The OCIS WWW server contains selected databases from the OSHA Computerized Information System (OCIS). OCIS contains a comprehensive set of safety health databases available to OSHA offices and the public including regulations, manuals, documents, chemical sampling information, and training.

Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE ) - SAE publishes many new, revised, and reaffirmed standards each year in three categories: Ground Vehicle Standards (J-Reports); Aerospace Standards; and Aerospace Material Specifications (AMS). Access to this up-to-date information is a key component of efficient product design, testing and operation. Because standards are an agreement on form, fit and function, they enable industries, engineering disciplines, and countries to talk to each other in a common language.

Underwriters Laboratories (UL) - UL is involved in the U.S. Safety System, developing the UL Mark symbol of safety. UL's activities involve evaluating more than 16,500 different types of products for safety hazards, developing standards to test products, and registering the quality systems of organizations worldwide to various quality standards, including ISO 9000 and QS-9000 standards.

World Standards Services Network (WSSN)

Commercial Standard Providers

Techstreet - provides engineering and technical documents from over 55 standards developing nations.
